Nigerian Shiite Muslims have accused Nigerian troops of killing 11 of their members and injuring 40 others in a clash between the group and soldiers in Zaria on Friday. In a statement on Friday night, the group said among those gunned down were Mahmud, the son of the leader of the group, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, as well as a woman with a baby strapped to her back. Ibrahim Musa, the editor of Al-Mizan, the weekly newspaper published by the group, said in a statement, “Reports reaching our news desk now indicated that some soldiers of the Nigerian army have opened fire on the tail end of the Quds procession held after Jumaat prayers in Zaria, Kaduna State. I want to see my parents – Another survivor Few days before Wednesday Kaduna bomb explosion, Abubakar Usman, 10, was full of hope and joy of going to wear a new pair of shoes during the forthcoming sallah day, but that joy was terminated when the bomb hit him and cut his leg. Usman told Saturday Sun on his hospital bed at 44 Army Reference Hospital that his mother had asked him to go and meet his elder brother to buy shoes for him at Kawo market. He said it was not too long when they entered the market that the bomb exploded, devastating the area and killing several people as well as injuring others. He said he did not know how he got to the hospital, but believed that government officials must have brought him there for medical treatment. Nasarawa Impeachment: chief judge names panel after lawmakers’ meeting with Jonathan

The investigative committee is expected to report to the House within seven days. —————– The Nasarawa State Chief Judge, Suleiman Dikko, has set up a seven-member panel to investigate the 16 count allegations levelled against Governor Tanko Almakura by the state House of Assembly. The appointment of the panel came a day after six of the lawmakers, led the Speaker, Musa Mohammed, met with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja. Details of the meeting remain unclear. The Chief Judge inaugurated the probe panel Friday, a day after the meeting. While inaugurating the panel at the conference hall of the state Ministry for Local Government along Shendam road, Lafia, Justice Dikko said the setting up of the committee was in line with the State Assembly’s request for him to appoint a seven man panel to investigate the governor. The man identified as Patrick Sawyer, arrived Lagos last Sunday from Liberia and died on Thursday night at the First Consultant Medical Centre, Obalende, Lagos, said state officials. However, during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said the patient died on Friday morning. “Despite the urgent specialized barrier nursing care provided for the patient in a Lagos Hospital, the patient unfortunately passed away in the early hours of July 25, 2014,” Mr. Chukwu said. Mr. Maigari was sacked on allegations of “financial misappropriation, misapplication and maladministration” The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aminu Maigari, has been impeached. Mr. Maigari was removed from office after a vote of no confidence was passed on him by members of the executive committee of the NFF at a meeting Mr. Maigari called to review Nigeria’s performance at the just concluded FIFA World Cup. An unnamed Nigerian man has been arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, 23 July, 2014 after the cocaine he was allegedly carrying burst in his belly. According to reports, the middle-aged man had arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi from Lagos. The incident was said to happen while the Nigerian traveller was still on transit and he was immediately hospitalised. Mr. Chidoka was head of the Federal Road Safety Corps   President Goodluck Jonathan has named Osita Chidoka, the former Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, as new Aviation Minister. Mr. Chidoka was sworn in Wednesday alongside Abubakar Olanrewaju, who was appointed National Planning Minister. Mr. Olanrewaju, from Kwara State, replaces Shamsudeen Usman, who was removed last September. Mr. Chidoka replaces Stella Oduah, fired in February amid allegations of mismanagement of public funds. Until Mr. Olanrewaju’s appointment, the National Planning Commission was supervised by the Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda. The two new Ministers were sworn in shortly before the commencement of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, Wednesday. A 47-year-old farmer, Gbenga Ogunfolabo has been arrested by the police in Ogun State for stabbing his wife, Bosede Ogunfolabo, 45, to death with broken bottle during a fisticuff. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement. According to him, the police detectives attached to Ishara division of the command arrested the suspect on Monday, July 21 at Ishara in Remo North Local Government Area of the state few days after he committed the crime. An explosion has occurred in central Kaduna killing at least 10 people, a witness has said. The blast occurred Wednesday afternoon along Isa Kaita road which leads to the popular Murtala Square. A witness said the explosion is believed to have targeted the convoy a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, who was on his way to the Square. The witness, Hassan Mohammed, told PREMIUM TIMES that the bomb, concealed in a red Volkswagen golf car parked by the road side, was detonated as the cleric’s convoy drove past. The sheikh escaped unhurt, the witness said. “As I speak to you now, I can see many bodies on the ground,” Mr. Mohammed said. The police could not be immediately reached. But the witness said security and emergency officials have arrived at the scene evacuating the victims of the blast.
