Mr President, I would like to commence by appreciating your vision in convening this timely and crucial meeting. GRADUATE INTENSHIP SCHEME-GIS

The Graduate Internship Scheme ( GIS ) was launched in October, 2012 to create opportunity for graduates to be attached to firms /organizations, where they can work for a year and enjoy a monthly stipend of N30,000 with a Group Life and Accident Insurance . Such interns can use the opportunity to gain working experience and enhance their employability skils. The project has commenced registration of such firms and over 181,800 beneficiaries have been registered. This is beyond the threshold of 50,000 allotted for the scheme in any given year. Deployment of such beneficiaries has commenced. The average rate of unemployment worldwide is 14.2% while Nigeria’s rate of unemployment is 19.7%. The country as a whole is above the world average and some States are actually above the National average. According to the table above, fifteen (15) States  fall within that category. Twelve Nigerian soldiers were on Tuesday sentenced to death for mutiny after shots were fired at their commanding officer in the restive northeast city of Maiduguri earlier this year. A nine-member military tribunal, sitting in Abuja, convicted the soldiers following the incident on May 14 when shots were fired at the commanding officer of the Nigerian Army's 7th Division, which is tasked with fighting Boko Haram insurgents. Court president Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Okonkwo said the sentences were subject to confirmation by Nigeria's military authorities but added there was no doubt about the gravity of the offence. The Senate has finally passed for third and final reading, a Bill for an Act to establish the Nigeria Public health (quarantine, isolation and emergency health procedures).
