Anambra first lady unfolds empowerment programme
The wife of the newly elected Anambra State Governor, Lady Ebele
Obiano, over the weekend announced that she would assist no fewer than
5,210 indigent women in the state to set up small-scale businesses this
month.
Speaking at the Women Development Centre in Awka on the occasion of the
2014 Mothers Summit, Mrs Obiano said the proposed intervention was
part of her pet project, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE),
with equal number of beneficiaries drawn from each of the 177
communities in the state.
She also said that about 2,655 vulnerable children would benefit from
her welfare scheme, while 1,416 physically challenged persons would
receive succour under the scheme.
Speaking on the theme of the summit, 'Women and Progress in Anambra: A
Priority Agenda', Obiano observed that despite the roles women played
in the society, their healthcare and other needs were not readily
available and affordable.
She said for this reason, the CAFE had embarked on the provision of
life-saving kits to expectant mothers and the distribution of cancer
testing kits to women for early detection of breast cancer.
She said the intervention would widen the scope and number of beneficiaries in the years ahead
