Nobel Peace prize winner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu; wife of late Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel;  Pakistani girl education rights activist, Malala Yousafzai and two other civil rights campaigners, have written a letter to world leaders, including President Goodluck Jonathan, warning of dangers that lie ahead in 2015 as a result of growing insecurity. South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu In the letter by the trio, Mo Ibrahim and Muhammed Yunus Bono, they said the leaders had failed to build on progress and allowed poverty, hunger and pandemics to spread. They, therefore, drew the attention of the world leaders to a movement that is on the way, which will hold accountable those leaders who fail to help secure a better, safer world and as well celebrate leaders who rise to the occasion. Their letter read: “Dear world leaders, we write to sound a warning. A warning that 2015 will be a year of huge oppor-tunity, but also of huge risk. “What is at st...

#BringBackOurGirls: Campaigners to hold conferences around the world

Image
Wednesday marks the 100th day of the girls stay in captivity. ——————————- The #BringBackOurGirls protesters on Tuesday said they would hold conferences in various countries across the globe to mark the 100th day of the abduction of the over 200 girls in Nigeria. According to a statement released by the group, the conferences aim to show that Nigerians would not be silenced in their efforts to ensure that the Nigerian government lived up to its responsibility to the citizens. “The continued pattern of intolerance to the activities of the Bring Back Our Girls Campaign is at variance with our effort to promote healthy civic engagement by citizens to strengthen the resolve of government to rescue the girls. As we denounce the wave of terror and insecurity across the country, we continue to demand that the Federal Government deploy its resources to ensure that the missing girls are brought home, and the errors leading...

Image
Former Minister, Oby Ezekwesili   Ms. Ogar accuses Ezekwesili of feeling too big to subject herself to security checks The Department of State Security, DSS, has attacked the former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, for complaining over her arrest by security operatives at the Abuja airport early Monday. Jonathan Fires Back at Buhari: You lack moral right to complain about impunity

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan has responded to comments attributed to a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, castigating him for an alleged brutal crackdown on the opposition in the country. In a statement by his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, Mr. Jonathan described Mr. Buhari’s statement as uncharitable and unwarranted. The president advised the former head of state not to blame him for his party’s woes. “We therefore urge General Buhari to tarry a while, ponder over his own antecedents and do a reality check as to whether he has the moral right to be so carelessly sanctimonious,” Mr. Jonathan said. “It may well be time to pull the brakes, as General Buhari says in his statement, but it is he and others who have resorted to idle scapegoating and blaming President Jonathan for their self-inflected political troubles who need to stop their inexcusable partisanship and show greater regard for the truth, democracy, constitutionalism, the rule of law, peace, security and the ...
